I’ve been asked this question in more ways than one, and after talking through it with each person, I decided to make a post about it – well and through great suggestion from a good friend.

Who doesn’t want more energy?

I’m afraid people feel like they need to settle with the lack of energy, because they are killing themselves with a workout. NOT TRUE!!! Take care of your body, as you need that energy to successful burn the unwanted fat and build that much needed muscle. Why? Because MUSCLE BURNS FAT!! Sound familiar?

So, are you finding that you are bonking mid-day? Having a hard time getting up in the morning after a workout the evening before? Chances are, it’s due to your diet and lack of nutrients.

Not only is your diet a key variable in any successful workout regime, but also the proper supplementation. We can get an abundant of your energy stimulation from the foods we eat, but chances are – are you really eating the right things?

For those of you that I’ve advised with particular Beachbody at home workout systems or helped guide with proper nutrition*, you know that I will always default to the nutrition guide that came with your workout system, whether it be P90X®, ChaLEAN Extreme®, Insanity™ or Slim in 6®. These nutrition guides were developed specifically for these programs, so do yourself a favor – and FOLLOW, USE AND ENJOY THEM!!! The recipes are good and fairly easy, even I can make them!

If you don’t follow a specific workout regime or a nutrition plan, then this could very well be your problem. If my experience, as a self-professed gym rat, prior to P90X, Insanity and all my new Beachbody favorites, I was at an all time low in the energy department, and I DIDN’T HAVE KIDS AT THE TIME! Now I have kids and I have MORE energy than I ever have. Why? I eat appropriately, according to my workout regime and I have a workout regime that keeps changing.

As many of you may know, I’m in the midst of training for my 2nd marathon, all while doing the newest Insanity™ workout system. Well, if Insanity isn’t enough, trying to keep up with my energy to get training runs in each week, I have to be very careful and very particular about what I eat, so I don’t bonk.

Yeah, yeah, many of you are shaking your head saying “Shoot, if you workout that much, you can eat what you want”! In my case, and the bulk of American’s, not so much. If I were to eat what I wanted, I surely wouldn’t have the appropriate protein/fat/carbohydrate ratio to properly refuel before and after each workout. So I need a balance. That’s where my diet is key here. This should go for everyone and anyone that is looking for results, good energy and success with their selected workout plan.

Now, as I say diet is the key to most any results, whether it be weight loss or muscle gain, so is proper supplementation. Do you take a multi-vitamin? Do you take a Joint Support supplement? What about your daily nutrients, minerals, antioxidants, etc., etc.? These are all essential compliments to your diet, in order to sustain good energy to keep you going through the day.

Many know that I’m a big fan of Beachbody’s latest supplement creation, Shakeology®, and won’t go a day without consuming it as either a meal replacement or as a snack. It’s A) DELICIOUS (check out the recipes) and B) provides you with over 70 vital vitamins, nutrients, minerals, phytonutrients, prebiotics and a list of other words and terms we would otherwise NEVER use in our vocabulary. But these are what provide your body with the fuel to keep and stay energized throughout the day, as it fulfills what the body lacks, as we work hard through our fitness program and just day-to-day life.

So, to make a long post even longer, the moral to the story here is proper diet and supplementation (as it’s next to impossible – although not entirely – to get it all from diet) is essential to deliver results and sustain proper energy to avoid that mid-day BONK!

As always, if I can help guide you in a direction towards good health, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me!

To your health & fitness!

* I am not a certified nutritionist or dietitian. If ever in doubt or have questions about your health and diet, please consult your doctor or a licensed professional. My advice is based off personal experience and self education and research. I am also not a certified Personal Trainer…..yet.

An amazing article I had to re-post that one of my favorite fitness celebs posted – Chalene Johnson. For me, it was my “ah-ha” and for others that I’ve shared this with, it re-settled their discourage and kept them charging forward with their respective workout program and goals. DON’T GIVE UP and get some great insight from this fitness expert:

Probably the most common question I get when I release a new exercise program is, “Help! I’m gaining weight! Am I doing something wrong?” This is a common phenomena with any new exercise program, Turbo Kick, Turbo Jam, Hip Hop Hustle, you name it! It’s especially common (and temporary) with intense strength training programs like ChaLEAN Extreme or Tony Horton’s P90X.

The motivation to start a new exercise program is almost always to lose weight loss. However, what most personal trainers know and most at-home exercisers do not, is that a new exercise program often can cause an immediate (and temporary) increase on the scale. (Notice I didn’t say weight gain! I’ll explain.) This common increase in the scale is also the reason why perhaps millions of people start and then quickly quit their resolution to get fit.

The temporary weight gain explained:
When someone starts a new exercise program, they often experience muscle soreness. The more intense and “unfamiliar” the program, the more intense the muscle soreness. This soreness is most prevalent 24 to 48 hours after each workout. In the first few weeks of a new program, soreness is the body trying to “protect and defend” the effected or targeted tissue. Exercise physiologists refer to this as delayed-onset muscle soreness, or DOMS.

This type of soreness is thought to be caused by tissue breakdown or microscopic tears in muscle tissue. When this happens the body protects the tissue. The muscle becomes inflamed and slightly swollen with fluid retention. This temporary retention of fluid can result in a 3- to 4-pound weight gain within a few weeks of a new program. Keep in mind that muscle soreness is not necessarily a reflection of how hard you worked. In fact, some people feel no signs of muscle soreness, yet will experience the muscle protection mechanisms of water retention and slight swelling.

Most people are motivated enough to put up with this temporary muscle soreness. Yet, many, especially those who really need immediate weight loss to keep them motivated in those first couple of weeks become discouraged and quit!

When I worked with a group of 70 test participants during the development stages of ChaLEAN Extreme, this happened. Who was the most upset and discouraged? You guessed it… the women! I’m happy to report with absolutely every single woman (and man) in our group, the weight increase was temporary and never lasted more than 2 weeks before they started to see a major drop in the scale. However, these people had the advantage of working with someone who was able to explain to them why this was happening and assure them the weight would come off if they stuck to the nutrition plan and stayed true to the program.

For those of you who are following the ChaLEAN Extreme phase plan, keep in mind that when you start each phase, your body will be “in shock” again. Don’t be surprised or discouraged if you experience a temporary gain on the scale the first week of each phase.

My own personal example of this is running 10K’s. I don’t do it very often, maybe 1 or 2x a year. Even though I run on a regular basis, when you run a race you push much harder. It’s natural for me to be “insanely” sore the next day. It’s also very common for me to see the scale jump 4 pounds the next day from forcing fluids post race and the resulting DOMS. Even though I know the cause of it, it’s still a bummer. We’re all human and hard work should mean “results”. Hard work equals results, but our bodies are amazing machines and they know how to protect us from hurting our selves. Soreness forces you to give those muscles a break Ultimately you will lose the weight and you will change your metabolism in the process.

The key is understanding that this is a normal and temporary and stick with the program!!

When to be concerned:
If you experience a significant weight gain (exceeding 5 pounds) which does not begin to decrease rapidly after the second week, guess what it is??? I’ll give you one hint… you put it in your mouth and chew it. You know it! You’re food (or calorie laden beverages). Newsflash friends.. exercise doesn’t make you gain weight. Consuming more food than you burn makes you gain weight!

So if after two weeks you are not losing weight, have gained weight that’s not coming off, it’s time to take a close and honest look at your food intake. It’s time to find out what your burning in calories each day. Have your RMR or BMR tested. This can be done for less than $50 and the information is invaluable. It takes out the guess work. Google “hydrostatic body fat testing _______ ” and insert the name of the big city you’re closest too. Companies that do HBFT also do BMR testing. Knowledge is king.

I’m gaining weight, but I’m sure it’s muscle:
Possibly, but if you’re following ChaLEAN Extreme correctly, you should be losing fat and gaining muscle and the fat loss should be much more substantial than the rate at which you can physically put on muscle. This is even true for the guys. Of the 70 plus people in my test group, every single one of them lost body fat and gained muscle and not one of them gained weight. I believe the average weight loss after 4 months was 28 pounds with many people losing 40 plus pounds. Even the men, who as you can see put on a lot of muscle, were seeing huge drops in the scale. We tested their muscle composition at the beginning and at the end and 100% of the participants maintained or gained muscle while achieving substantial weight loss. That’s the key to keeping weight off long term, i.e. muscle. Muscle burns fat. But you’ve heard me say that before.

Moral of the story:
Be patient young grass hoper. You’ll be lean and mean in no time!

This is one of the most useful articles I have come across that makes sense and enlightens one, as they prepare for their new program or are in the midst of it. Just having an understanding and a reason why we experience this temporary weight gain, makes the experience that much more enjoyable.

I hope you enjoyed this article and get the mileage that I, and many others have, out of it. Thanks Chalene!

I get this question asked to me A LOT! So, in the effort to hopefully help others that have this very same question and are looking for something that is suited to their own fitness style and ability, I thought I’d break it down a bit:

Let’s start with the basics:

1. What’s your current level of fitness activity?

A. Very limited, maybe a short walk here and there. (May also have some health issues that inhibit workout activity – high blood pressure, pre-diabetic, Type 2 Diabetes, heart condition, etc).

B. My activity is sporadic, some weeks are better than others.

C. I’m fairly active and hit the gym as much as 3 x’s a week, but not seeing results.

D. I’m VERY active and strong. (i.e.: I run quite a bit, do cross training, boot camps).

2. What are your fitness goals?

A. To find a program with a consistent level of lower impact activity.

B. To find a program that will keep me active and is active.

C. I want to see results, but I’m not a beginner and I’m not advanced

D. I want something higher impact and that incorporates weight training & cardio.

3. What is your time commitment to reaching your goals?

A. I can commit to about 45-60 minutes, 2-3 days a week.

B. I can commit to about 30-60 minutes, 3-4 days a week.

C. I can commit to about 45-60 minutes, 4-5 days a week.

D. I can commit to about 45-75 minutes, 5-6 days a week.

Ok, so these are just 3 top questions that I generally ask anyone interested in getting started with a workout program, but not really knowing what is the best one for them.

Often times, people want to immediately start with P90X, when they are NO condition to begin with a program that is so advanced. The beauty of the selection of Beachbody programs, is that there is something for EVERYONE, and not every program will be suited for all…but definitely challenges to work towards.

So here’s a breakdown of what workout program would work best based off these category of questions (scroll down to bottom of the page to review the short video clip showcasing each product and its brief description):

If you answered mostly A’s:

A few recommended programs would be: Slim in 6® Rapid Results, Kathy Smith’s Project: You! Type 2®, Total Body Solution™ or Tony and the Folks® (for active adults 55+)

If you answered mostly B’s:

A few recommended programs would be: Slim in 6® Rapid Results, 10-Minute Trainer®, Power 90® or Yoga Booty Ballet®

If you answered mostly C’s:

A few recommended programs would be: Turbo Jams®, Hip Hop Abs®, Rockin’ Body®, 10-Minute Trainer® or Power 90®.

If you answered mostly D’s:

A few recommended programs would be: P90X®, Tony Horton’s One-on One Series, ChaLEAN Extreme® or Insanity®

This is a great article featured in the latest Beachbody newsletter. Don’t miss an issue, as there are great articles to further your health and fitness goals.

No matter what your age, body type, or fitness level, we’re pretty sure one of your main workout goals is to improve your abs. And why not? A flat midsection, with or without a visible six-pack, is the ultimate symbol of being fit and lean. (And yes, it looks great at the beach.) But it’s not just a matter of vanity—a strong core helps stabilize your entire body. That’s why every Beachbody workout program includes a variety of ab-tightening exercises.

Still, whatever you’re doing to get fit, there’s always room for improvement where the core is concerned. Here are five tips to help you to get those great abs faster than ever:

1. Work your entire core. Your “core,” the trunk muscles of your abdomen, lower back, and pelvis, is a whole system that supports your body as you stand up straight, perform everyday activities, and work out. And it’s important to strengthen all these muscles, not just the rectus abdominis (the main “six-pack” muscles targeted by crunches). At the very least, you should strengthen the spinal erectors of the lower back to balance out your abs, which will help your posture and reduce the risk of back pain. Think of total-core training as increasing your functional fitness—meaning you won’t just look better, but you’ll also be able to do things better too. (P90X’s Core Synergistics workout and ChaLEAN Extreme’s Extreme Abs workout are great examples of complete core workouts.)

2. ChaLEAN Extreme®Take it slow. When you’re doing crunches or other ab-focused exercises, it’s easy to speed up and lose proper form, especially when you start to get tired. Either you let momentum carry you through much of the movement or you pull yourself up with your back and shoulders. But you’ll get the most benefit (and the least chance of injury) from your workout if you concentrate on measured, controlled movements. And keep the abdominals contracted the entire time. After all, they’re the ones that should be doing the work. (Doing some Pilates-style movements—like ChaLEAN Extreme’s Pilates Roll-Up, in which you lift your upper body to a count of 8—is a good way to train yourself to slow it down.) When you can’t do any more reps with the proper form, it’s time to stop.

3. Don’t overdo it. If you really want great abs, you may be tempted to grind out crunch after crunch to the exclusion of other exercises, or to do more ab-centered workouts than your fitness program recommends. But directly working your abs too often can do more harm than good. Like any muscle, the abdominals need to recover between workouts. If you find you aren’t improving the number of reps you can do or the amount of weight you can handle, that’s a sign that you’re overtraining, and you need to cut back.

4. Don’t neglect the rest of your body. The more you work your entire body, the better it is for your abs. In fact, just about any full-body or compound movement, from push-ups to squats to deadlifts, takes a lot of ab effort. (That’s the whole point behind programs like Hip Hop Abs® and the upcoming RevAbs™, which give you great core results without focusing on crunches.) What’s more, working your full body will burn many more calories and raise your metabolism, which is important, because you also need to . . .

5. Lose the fat to make your abs flat. No matter how much you strengthen your abdominal muscles, the only way to get a flat midsection is to lose body fat. That’s going to require a diet that’s high in protein and fiber, low in simple carbs, and full of bulky, nutrient-dense foods that keep you full with fewer calories—and of course, plenty of water. If you’re on a meal plan associated with a particular workout, make sure you’re really following it and not fudging here and there. (Keeping a food diary can help.) When you combine an effective full-body workout with a proper diet, getting the flat abs you’ve always wanted is just a matter of time.

So, with that said, how was I going to prepare for it? Many of my friends and family asked me daily, “how are you preparing for this race?” There was a lot of preparation involved. Not only physical, but mental. You have to get into that mental space to be able to prepare for such a long journey. So, I had to have a little ‘heart-to-heart’ with myself, so I knew what was expected.

Before getting involved in Beachbody and the Coaching program, I would say I was pretty cognicent of the things I put in my body, in the way of fast food, convenience foods, etc. Well, not to the tune of this article a new Coach of mine shared with me. In fact, this article was written by her daughter, Katheranne, when she was in 6th grade – she’s now 15 years old. It blew my mind with how educated she was on the dangers of the fast food chains, in particular McDonald’s. They have a great website, that’s favored to all things healthy and active. So check it out: www.healthitude.com.

Now, back to this article. Katheranne, which made her debut on her Mom’s website, now is a permanent fixture and has her very own Kat’s Korner, editorial page. She made an astonishing point that “….the “Golden Arches” are now more recognized than the Christian cross….” Um, what?? Now, that’s frightening.

With well over 2 billion dollars (likely more now, with celeb endorsements, etc) in paid adversiting EACH YEAR, McDonald’s continues to feed the minds of our impressionable future, that a quick, hardy and affordable dollar menu is the answer to their daily meal plan. Mind you, over the years, they have successful introduced more “nutritional options”, but what kid is going to select their Asian Chicken Salad, when they can get a Happy Value Meal for the same price…and it comes with a toy! Go figure.

Clearly, education comes from the parents. We can’t rely on the television and media publications to educate our children on proper nutrition. BUT, it would be nice if they would help reinforce what parents should be teaching their children. After all, if we can instill in our children, proper eating habits, we could actually see our rising trends in childhood obesity, begin to plummet. Imagine that? It could happen….it just starts with the parents.

Recognizing I’ve gone off my tangent here, I want to leave you with Katheranne’s outstanding article to help you hold a little faith, that by proper education from the parents, our children do have a chance at making good nutritional choices. Just take Kat’s parents as an example. GREAT JOB, Mom & Dad!!

View Kat’s Korner – THE EVIL EMPIRE OF MCDONALD’S - and be blown away by such charasmatic writing.

Here’s to the future of our children, living long and healthy lifestyles!

Since we’ve embarked on our final decent into Spring, I’ve decided to get a little more realistic with my personal challenges, so have moved them to weekly. I think many would agree, it’s important to master one each time, then to rush on to the next. So, that’s exactly what I’m doing. So…….

Challenge # 4 is……

Take more time to STRETCH before and after workouts.

I’ve known always that this is the key to avoiding injury, increase flexibilty and mobility, but it’s usually the one part in my exercise routine that gets cut short…and that needs to STOP. I do warm up and cool down for roughly 2-3 minutes before each workout, which in asking some trainers, is appropriate. BUT, I really would like to work on more flexibilty, minimize any opportunity for injury and enhance my mobility.

I’m currently training for my 1st marathon (YAH! Go me!) and much of that involved endurance and taking appropriate measure to avoid injury. This is where STRETCHING can be key.

So as Tony Horton reiterates for us in the video above: “Flexibity is the Fountain of Youth”. I’m going to give my body the best reward and enhance its durability – thanks Tony!

Join me in this challenge for now and your future!

I had the great opportunity to speak with David Gise, one of the creators behind Fitspott, a social networking site for fitness professionals and enthusiasts, a-like, to share their passion of helping others. So, immediately, David and I had a connection, given our respective businesses.

As we met on Twitter, we began “tweeting” about renowned non-profit organizations and their involvement in the fitness and nutrition arena, to help make a difference in our youths and their future. One of the topics we began discussing was Beachbody’s recent alliance with the American Diabetes Association® and the efforts to help combat the effects of type 2 diabetes. As a Beachbody Coach, this has been an incredible time to be apart of the business, in the fact that not only do we aspire to make a difference in those that need to lose weight and get healthy, but those that are suffering a disease that can be managed by proper nutrition and exercise.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause two problems:

Right away, your cells may be starved for energy.

Over time, high blood glucose levels may hurt your eyes, kidneys, nerves or heart.

Source: ADA website.

Throughout much research, it’s been documented that type 2 diabetes can be managed through proper diet and nutrition as by:

improving your body’s use of insulin

reducing body fat

increasing muscle strength and bone density

lowering blood pressure and bad cholesterol

improving blood circulation

increasing energy levels, and

reducing stress

…these all have a direct association with combating type 2 diabetes.

Anyway, in speaking earlier to what an incredible organization Beachbody is to work with, it almost seems historical to be a part of a business that has partnered with an organization like the ADA, to join efforts in helping ward off a disease that touches so many. Together with nutritionists, doctors and certified diabetic educators, in October 2008, Beachbody® launched Kathy Smith’s Project YOU!: Type 2™, in alliance with the American Diabetes Association®. It’s the first all-in-one solution to help manage diabetes, reduce your risk for diabetes complications, and get you back in control of your life!

The program comes complete with a 12 week workout guide, workout wallet with CD’s and DVD’s, Workout Calendar, cookbook, mix and match meal cards, program guides and 12-week food & fitness journal, a Beachbody coach and online support. (**It is important to note that proceeds from the sale of this product support American Diabetes Association’s mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of people with diabetes.

So, if you, or anyone you know is pre-diabetic, suffers from Type 2 diabetes, do them the great reward of introducing them to Kathy Smith’s Project You!: Type 2™ and get them on the road to recovery and back to living a healthy and fruitful live.
